In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
gnomic \NOH-mik\ adjective
1. characterized by aphorism
2. given to the composition of aphoristic writing
Example sentences:
Some critics have praised the young artist's gnomic utterances, while others argue that her sayings are simply pretentious rubbish.
"The film is grand but complex, canny and sincere.
If Spielberg were more intellectual or more gnomic in discussing his films, he might be regarded not as a mass-market wizard but as a cult director."
From a film review by Francine Stock in Prospect, January 24, 2013
Etymology:
A gnome is an aphorismthat is, an observation or sentiment reduced to the form of a saying. Gnomes are sometimes couched in metaphorical or figurative language, they are often quite clever, and they are always concise. We borrowed the word "gnome" in the 16th century from the Greeks, who based their "gnōmē" on the verb "gignōskein," meaning "to know." (That other "gnome"the dwarf of folklorecomes from New Latin and is unrelated to today's word.) We began using "gnomic," the adjective form of "gnome," in the early 19th century. It describes a style of writing (or sometimes speech) characterized by pithy phrases, which are often terse to the point of mysteriousness.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)

WFB's attempt to emulate us ; ) No pushing at the door please!
Rise and shine!
I had an argument yesterday with a guy who loved the movie “AVATAR”.
He insisted on loving it, even after I explained the gnomic bias towards reincarnation and environmentalism vs. capitalism and freedom.
And in my case, ignorant posting without checking before I hit send!
I got TWO Ribbons????
WOW!
I blame my morning bleariness on watching most of the filibuster until the wee hours.
No problem. I will gladly concede the second ribbon.
It was nice while it lasted!
LOL
Ronald Reagan, smart and gnomic

His “Shining city on a hill”

Worth a million Barack Obamas
Bill O’Reilly is partial to gnomics — the pithier the better.
BTW, there was nothing gnomic about Rand Paul’s 13 hour rant yesterday. Don’t think that I disagree at all because I used the word rant. I loved every minute of it, but it was NOT pithy.
Hadn’t watched Oreilly in awhile, basically since hockey started back up. But i saw something on Twitter yesterday about the blowup he had with Colmes, i watched that vid and then watched the show last night. Mr. O has finally climbed on board. His talking points last night started with stating that Obama’s primary objective is to destroy the Republican party even if it means destroying the country in the process. His interaction with Dennis Miller was pretty sobering. Dennis said you are late to this particular party, Billy. He measured his words carefully but said that he didn’t think Obama was as nice or as smart as Bill had given him credit for originally.
Gnomic
Gnomic refers to the little men that herd gnus in Gnome, Alaska.
How’s this for pithy.
For the first time in my adult life, I’m proud of the Senate.
Go Rand Go.
I thought you were going to tell me it was the megaphone used by the little Travelocity dude. A for you.
He’s worked from home all week but is going to go in today, so he must be feeling better. I’ve been told that my nursing skills are those of Nurse Ratched....
Meanwhile, one of my senators went out to dinner with the moron. I haven’t liked that guy from day one and he reinforces my belief regularly.
