Word For The Day, Thursday, March 7, 2013 – gnomic
dictionaries ad nauseam | 7 March 2013 | Thursday's sub

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

gnomic \NOH-mik\ adjective
1. characterized by aphorism
2. given to the composition of aphoristic writing

Example sentences:
Some critics have praised the young artist's gnomic utterances, while others argue that her sayings are simply pretentious rubbish.

"The film is grand but complex, canny and sincere.… If Spielberg were more intellectual or more gnomic in discussing his films, he might be regarded not as a mass-market wizard but as a cult director."
— From a film review by Francine Stock in Prospect, January 24, 2013

Etymology:
A gnome is an aphorism—that is, an observation or sentiment reduced to the form of a saying. Gnomes are sometimes couched in metaphorical or figurative language, they are often quite clever, and they are always concise. We borrowed the word "gnome" in the 16th century from the Greeks, who based their "gnōmē" on the verb "gignōskein," meaning "to know." (That other "gnome"—the dwarf of folklore—comes from New Latin and is unrelated to today's word.) We began using "gnomic," the adjective form of "gnome," in the early 19th century. It describes a style of writing (or sometimes speech) characterized by pithy phrases, which are often terse to the point of mysteriousness.

The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)

Mine too.

I do not totally object to mine doing so, but he should have been on the floor before or after to help in the assist.

But you see he’s of the McCain wing. And frankly that wing has lost us enough elections.

Your guy, if I remember right, is an odious RINO and shill for the banks who wants to push terrible legislation like “MERS 2”

I was told in my meeting last night that my supervisor, who is not a nurse, considered herself to know all about nursing because she once checked someone’s BP in an office. I was done at that point. I came home and told the spouse since I have been in the room for heart surgery, I know all about being a CV surgeon and because I have voted, I know all about being the president.

But the others reported on it — even on other stations. Actually, I was out last night at our annual County Republican Caucus — a long, boring evening.

But, I made a difference. We blocked a really bad candidate from becoming treasurer with a nomination from the floor. And we blocked another really bad candidate from being elected as a Representative At Large.

The lady who will be treasurer was elected by ONE vote, so it was important that my husband and I attended. They even refused to count 2 of her votes because the voters wrote her in but did not circle her name. (so she ereally won by 3) Of course the chair did not tell us that was necessary to circle her name before we cast the ballots.

So, on the next ballot where we chose the Reps at Large — 5 out of 8 names, I voted for ONE and circled, checked, Xed, underlined, and made a little circle and colored it in. Just to be sure that the judges counting the ballots would know who I was voting for!

Republican Caucuses are so Mickey Mouse in the first place and for the chair to change the rules in the middle of a vote is just unacceptable. (actually it was the County Judge counting the ballots who changed the rules) We had to call back ballots which were already being cast for the At Large candidates. Then those ballots had to be counted to be sure that all of them were collected. Those were destroyed. New ballots were distributed and we did the process all over again.

We didn’t get out until after all the restaurants were closed. I got a chicken sandwich from Mickie D’s that was too salty and not very satisfying. But, we got our candidates in. And the bad ones out. A good night all the way around. (But, I missed O’Reilly but caught the last half of the rerun of While Collar so I could study the maneuvers.)

Cloudy and 60-and maybe rain on the way-

The stupid, gnomic speeches
Designed for his adoring herds
Should get king Obama fined
For content, truth and words-

Say, maybe 100 dollars for each
Incorrectly constructed sentence-
And for each lie that it contains,
A requirement for full repentance-

Make him face the driveby media
With no koolaid for them to drink
Then see if they critique his speech
For causing an embarrassing stink...

All the ridiculous crap about Chavez coming from “important” people in Venezuela has me LMAO-the US gave him cancer, he died of a heart attack, he pleaded not to die because he was dedicated to people, etc-but that he will be “resurrected with Jesus” is almost blasphemy.

That shows what happens when a 3d world hellhole-like Saudi Arabia, etc-gets a false sense of importance and thinks their leaders are smart just because they can sell oil and buy WMDs...
