Thanks. I figured the reason for his actions was he had lost his son.
Worse than that, when Rick left him in the first episode, he gave him his gun so he could shoot his wife who had turned. Evidently he couldn't do it....
Now we just found out that later on the wife had attacked the son and he had to shoot them both........If he had taken care of her in the beginning, the son would still be alive.
