The party is just a reflection of the people, not the other way around. The Republican party is moving left on these social issues because the public is. Once upon a time decades ago we fought over things like contraception and porn magazines, as the public began to accept those things the party simply shifted to accept them too.
The problem in this country is the education, media and entertainment establishments are all far left. They are pushing the culture left at a rapid pace. The parties just follow - the Democrats first and then the Republicans. When conservatives make inroads at winning back the culture, then the Republican party will move in that direction too. In the meantime, the GOP is simply the lesser of two evils (which is what you almost always get in a 2 party system anyway).
I graduated from high school in 1972. I remember people talking about this proposal or that proposal and someone would always say, “people would never accept that!”
My response was always the same: “What you mean is that ‘this generation’ would never accept that.” Being a student of history even back then, and being in the middle of the hippie generation but seeing it for the lunacy it was, I saw the way people were being conditioned to accept what was clearly “stupid” just a few short years before.
Those that wish to change the hearts and minds of the unwashed masses have it down to a science. And if you watch tv, make no mistake: You are part of the unwashed masses whether you know it or not.

The R party is not a "reflection" of the people, longbow. The majority of the people are not leftists. Dems need massive voter fraud to win. If the R candidates like McCain and Romney are reflections of the R party regulars, they do they lose? (Apart from fraud, which in the last election, was huge and coordinated.) They lost mainly because so many Americans could not stomach voting for NON-conservative candidates.
