The announcer just said “We don’t always breed dogs to do what they were intended to do. Now we breed them for temperament and as companions”.

Horse’s mouth.

That's sad...dogs are SO HAPPY when they are doing what they were bred to do! From day one, Belle wanted nothing more than to hunt birds. She was only about 12 weeks old when the hubby took her out prior to hunting Season just to teach her hand commands.

Within about 15 minutes she had found an old pheasant nest and was jumping up and down with joy (feathers were flying everywhere...LOL!)

Makes for an interesting house dog...just "SLIGHTLY" high-energy. I remember reading up on German Shorthairs when we got her, and one comment stands out: "If you would not find it amusing to walk into a room to find your dog standing on the counter, or on top of a table, a GSP puppy may not be for you!" They are into everything; one of my fondest memories is of Belle charging into the room with a bucket stuck on her head (at full speed of course) straight into the side of a chair.

One of my friends has a male GSP. She came home one day to find him jumping up and down on the bed...having broken open her new down-filled comforter. Feathers were flying all over the room; she said it looked like the inside of a snow globe...she about died laughing while taking pictures of the event. Just gotta love 'em!

Horse’s mouth.<

While specifically referring to Bulldogs. Not much bullbaiting goes on in the US.

Manchester terriers were ratters. Now we use D-Con.

The above doesn’t mean some breeds deserve extinction just because their jobs have ceased to exist.
