In coursing trials, almost every time, the ‘pet’ will beat the show dog.
Just because it says “AKC”, it doesn’t mean the dog is a ‘perfect conformation specimen’.
The ‘more real’ breed representives generally excel over the show dogs, the only exception being obedience trials because it’s a test of commands and not athletic performance.
Bizarrely, my second Dobermann’s father had a field championship [yes, bird hunting] and my boy could out-hunt and out-point my dad’s obscenely expensive Brittany any day of the week.
I have a couple of friends who have two field trial labs who do very well. They also have two mastiffs. The mastiffs always accompanied them to the field trials. When the youngest one was still a pup he won a ribbon because he went out in the water to retrieve while most of the pups who were bred for it would not. there are also two poodles that field trial. Of course, that’s what they are bred or were bred for. They are water dogs.
