And here come the dogs !!!
He *might* be looking for a home.
I’ve had departed dogs ‘send replacements’.
:)
*Many* years ago a Dalmation handler wore a polka dot outfit.
It burned my retina.
You are right.
I was going to buy a Dobe bitch from a woman in NoVa but she only sells with limited papers and not at all if you have an intact dog in the house, already.
At $2500 and up, you would think you'd have some control over your own dog but you don't.
Her name is mud on the Dobe forum yet she perceives herself as a the Next Great Thing, despite the fact that she only -imports- Euro Dobes, does not show and rarely breeds.
[long story, weird woman]
I know of two BYBs who, through no intention or intellect of their own, just happen to have some really outstanding lines.
[blind pigs/acorns]
I could drive you around the back roads of hillbilly world and show you some incredible “PO-leece Dogs” who are square, firm, sound and most importantly, very old and still very mobile.
No show ring would have them...and that's probably the highest compliment they could receive.
Trying to find a “good Dobe” is nearly impossible if you go the show breeder route.
[said Dobe forum would collectively stroke out over that as they shred people who buy “greeder Dobes”..only show kennels are acceptable]
The Cambria bloodlines have overwhelmed the kennels with DCM because Cactus Cash was the IT stud for so long and insanely prolific.
He was homozygous for and died of DCM yet his frozen sperm is STILL being shipped worldwide.
Apparently some breeders don't care about the DCM threat as much as they do about getting his ‘winning look’, which he did indeed pass along to all of his get.
Piffle!
That is a very sound and correct Arabian.
I detest the giraffe-necked, freak headed things being bred today.
[”seahorses”..how very apt!]
“Praying Mantis head”
LMAO!
I’m picking up some really good descriptive phrases here...;D
“Cute & fuzzy factor”
At least yet another freak Peke didn’t win this year.
There are some judges who are so prejudiced towards fuzzy bunny dogs that I’ve seen them put up horrid things over excellent larger dogs with short coats.
A judge’s decision is inviolate.
They shall not be questioned.
[in public, anyway]
Sometime in the past few days one of the WWII NYT daily threads by FReeper Homer J Simpson showed an ad in the paper for the 1943 Westminster Kennel Show at Madison Square Garden. A $10 ticket covered both days.
Most expressive face on any dog I’ve ever owned.
Olde English Bulldogge
Bigger than the British, longer legs but still have the big chest and the pushed in nose.
Smaller than the American.
She’s an attempt to bring the breed back to what they were in the 1800’s with a better personality. And boy, does she have personality :-)
I thought the same for an instant, but he had a collar. I could see his tags bouncing up and down as he romped through the snow. I don’t know where he came from. We are on big land out here, and we just don’t see stray dogs. There is a 15 lot subdivision with shared open space next door. He could have come from there, except those homeowneers don’t allow their dogs to run loose. It’s a mystery.
You’ve hit on something that is a mystery to me. Today’s Pekenese does not look anything like the Pekenese of my youth — or, am I misremembering? I remember Pekes that had faces and shape to their bodies. (I’m talking 65 years ago.)
FOUR missing teeth??? Whoa, what is wrong with the DPCA???
The breed was developed for police work. They need good dentition.
Somebody needs to whack the club members upside the head!!
Form over function here.
I can really appreciate your points.
Since you are not far from me, maybe you can show me some of these BYB farm dogs someday! LOL
I was able to easily get my GS from a breeder with German lines, and she has WONDERFUL form including early on a beautiful gate as they should have (not American) but she is RIFE with health problems. She is the most gorgeous GS I’ve ever seen, but she is otherwise a poor example.
So you have conservatives on your Dobe forum, but they’d still scream bloody murder if you went down the street to an accidental breeding!
I think you’ll find many dogs aren’t that different, but show dogs grow out the hair more and deliberately puff it out. The announcers mentioned for Lhasas I think that most pets are shorn down so they don’t look as lavish and uncontrollable as the show type. That applies to all coated dogs but especially the little ones. It’s mostly the coat.
And no $20 in TicketMaster fees either!!
A big “Awwww” from me.
My family is glad Westminster is over for the year as they say, “Daaaaadddddd! Do you have to say “AWWWW. What A Face!!” every time a dog comes into the ring?!”
I wondered that too.
The Affen was a beautiful dog but (for my taste) there was a German Short Hair that took my breath away. And it did not win best in the sporting group.
I guess it gets down to what dog best fits what the AKC says is the breed standard. As for the intangibles, I could not see what the Aff had over other breeds last night (some years there are a few that just jump out at you. Not this year’s group though).
check out post 16. Man, they are making it nearly free!
BTW
If you need a smile or laugh, here is a web cam site that shows a litter of pups that are destined to be service dogs at Walter Reed.
Last summer they had Golden Retreivers and now there is a litter of yellow labs. (now about 2.5 months old)
