A new novel that retells the story of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice from the point of view of its servants has been sold around the world.
Longbourn, by Jo Baker, was snapped up by US and UK publishers last week.
"Jane Austen was my first experience of grown-up literature," said Baker.
"But as I read and re-read her books, I began to become aware that if I'd been living at the time, I wouldn't have got to go to the ball; I would have been stuck at home with the sewing."
The 39-year-old British author said she drew her inspiration from her family's years in service.

Love that book, would be interested in this new one. Thanks.
If you ever get the chance to watch Lost in Austen, it’s a fun British mini-series using the Pride and Prejudice as a basis.
Just did a quick google search and it looks like someone posted the whole mini series on youtube:

Probably depressing. I think I’d rather re-read P.G. Wodehouse’s “Jeeves” books as penance for the antics of the upper class employers, and the trials and tribulations of the servants.
I’ve read it twice. Only problem with it is that after each reading I found that I couldn’t write a letter without taking up an entire paragraph for every sentence. LOL!
Smashing book. Wish she’d written more.
Bookmarked. I plan on reading this. I am a huge fan of British literature and novels, Dickens (per my screen name)and Hardy,Thackery,Austin, to name a few.
