My screen name comes from the lead character of With Fire and Sword by Henryk Sienkiewicz based on this period of Polish history. I don't know if it still is but at one time the entire trilogy was required reading in all Polish schools.

Pan Yan (means: Sir Ian)...

Hm, Pan Jan (read Yan) is a typical Polish character and presents the Polish state of mind. In love - romantic and somewhat naive, to friends - open hearted and lavish, to enemies - non compromising, and above all - God Honor and Homeland. Nothing else matters.
