OK fellow FR ping list managers, here is a place to gather, to chat and to identify issues that we need help with.
Me first, since this is my thread. The pro-life/Catholic ping list is now so large that the system pings twice and three times all too often. Any ideas on fixing this?

To limit the ping to one instance, do this:
1) Hit the ‘post’ button
2) Count off 15 seconds
3) Hit the ‘back’ button on your browser.
I have 521 names on the border/illegal immigration list, and this is working for me.

My tip is, do a search for the term “Ping List” plus whatever topic, site:freerepublic.com before one even *thinks* of starting one. ;’) Or ask me if I’ve got one I’d be willing to part with. (please please please please please)
It’s a system glitch — the only fix is to split your list into smaller pieces and ping each section of it separately (but otherwise identically). Test to see how large the list has to be before the trouble starts, although I will say that, the Astronomy Picture of the Day list has only 99 names, and it *sometimes* doubles, but *usually* doesn’t.
I freepmailed the ping list advising them of the situation and asking them to confirm if they wanted to remain on the Catholic Ping List. I allotted 1 month before the conversion to allow infrequent posters and traveling freepers sufficient time to respond. Based on the responses, I built a new list. After one month, I switched over. After that, a few freepers freepmailed saying they were no longer receiving pings and their names were added to the new list.
The new list has also grown since then and I will go through this process again, sometime soon. Most importantly, It resolved the problem.
I bookmarked this thread which was last updated in 2006. Not sure if cgk is still maintaining these lists but, check it out!

It doesn’t bother me that your pings are multiples really, just makes it a bit harder to keep track of things on my comments page but heck, counted amongs the hardships and tragedies of life, the multiple pings aren’t even in the top million.
I feel bad my own ping lists because they each take up more room.

What was the number for which the ping list didn’t generate multiples?
Even with my 111 member list, it still does multiples. Some of my pings involve both lists and the total is around 360.
The secret is to CLOSE the window about two to three seconds after hitting the “POST” button. That seems to work.
MM - what is the difference between “ping page” and “posting page”? I don’t quite understand your method. I would like to stop hitting people two double and triple pings.
MM - don’t worry about answering my question, I’ll try HiJinx’s method and see if that helps.
HJinx - am I on your ping list? If not, I’d like to be. It’s hard to remember since I’m on quite a few lists, am busy, and then the multiples add fun.

I use the keyword ‘aliens’ on all threads of interest, then ping once a day to a thread. Then, FReepers can use the keyword link at the top of the FR Forum page to see a list of what has been posted at any given time.

Don't know. I try to keep the list under 100, and that seems to work.
