First, there was the casual questioning about my drinking habits. Upon evaluation of my answers, I was considered a (negative) as far as dangerous alcohol consumption with a rating of 2.

It's not only the VA.
My last trip to the hospital I glanced at the questionnaire that had been compiled on previous trips.
The nurse was verifying the info.

On the question of alcohol I had said in the past that I usually had a glass of wine before dinner.
I don't remember the exact wording but the questionnaire reported that I was an alcoholic.

If there is any way to check your medical records, do so.
All those records get written in stone and can be used against you.

Legally, you also have the right to rebut erroneous and misleading statements you may find in your record, although you might fight hard in order to get to do so. It would be a good idea to request copies of your medical record at least every year or so.

Sadly, I also agree totally with the folks who are less than totally honest with their responses regarding alcohol and other lifestyle choices. STDs, sexual trauma, legal history, etc., is medically pertinent, but in many cases providers will see this information and treat you with less care than you might deserve.
