I think it is a “shark attack” reporting trend, where the media fixates on a story type and reports anything that is related. It makes it seem like there is an increase in the incidents or that they are all related when it just the attention paid by the media to something they would normally ignore or not cover so extensively.

I think that is definitely part of it. Remember not long ago, two thugs shot at eachother, but because it was on a campus, it was live coverage plastered on every news channel because it was at A SCHOOL.
