Well she did try to join the Corps BUT they weren’t interested in Strong, Self Sufficient Women.
As to ‘taking’ sniper fire, I think she did ‘fluff’ it off (after much ridicule, mostly from the people that were with her) by saying “It was a big airport, there were rebels around, and they supposedly sprayed part of the airport, maybe, but they coulda woulda shoulda if they had know such an intelligent person as myself was in country” (not quite an exact quote BUT we are dealing with D’s here so it could be word for word for word and, if not to their liking, they would deny deny deny”.
