Richard Lugar Loses GOP Indiana Senate Primary by Landslide

The 36-year Senate veteran is trounced by Indiana State Treasurer Richard Mourdock, whose business and Tea Party backers spent $2.7 million to defeat a once-powerful pol they portrayed as out of touch.

That cracking, thudding sound emanating from Indiana on primary night Tuesday was the crumbling of a Washington institution, punctuated by muffled shrieks of terror from incumbent office-holders everywhere.

Republican Sen. Richard Lugar—a towering figure in the national-security, arms-control, and foreign-policy realms who six years ago was so popular in his home state that local Democrats didn’t bother to field an opponent—lost his bid for a seventh term to a lesser-known, more modestly financed challenger who successfully portrayed the 80-year-old incumbent as out of touch and not conservative enough.

How to lose an election? The election, in my opinion, was lost because no one stopped the voter fraud. Voting Machines? What a farce to not think they weren’t rigged and tampered with. The dead voted, some voted five or more times, the illegals voted, and the list goes on. There are no gonads within the GOP to put a stop to the fraud and corruption.

“You didn’t mention Tommy Thompson, Connie Mack, or George Allen”

All lost in states comfortably won by Obama and all were in states that the previous senator was a democrat.

Akin and Mourdock lost in states comfortably won by Romney.

Dean Heller actually won in 2012. He will be up again in 2018.

If that is what it takes to flush out a RINO and send a message to the liberal elites who run the GOP so be it.

A RINO in state office is a RINO who can run for President.

That is good news. And yes, we MUST flush these SOBs out of office.

They are merely file fillers for the Democrat Left.

LOL This thread drew all the RINO FReepers like flies to a steaming pile of fresh cow manure.

They all come running with their fake concern and feed us the crap about how a RINO is better than a democrat even if the RINO is a democrat.

The simple fact is that they are lower than the democrats because at least the democrats have the courage to proudly admit they are democrats.

You can't find a $58,000 condo within 50 miles of DC, and even then it's going to be a 1 roomer in a Baltimore slum.

I know housing in Indiana is far less expensive than here ~ just want to makes sure you know that too.

It's unfair!

The polls had Angle ahead until about two weeks prior to the election. She did her campaign no favors by inferring a 2nd-Amendment solution. Though we in principle would agree, that’s not a choice statement one wants to make in a political campaign. She might’ve made a fine Senator, but as a candidate she was lacking.

And what are you talking about with that statement about Heller losing? He won his election in 2012.

Your original post referenced someone behind the lines with a machine gun to ensure the troops moved forward. This was the Soviet model of discipline in the ranks, complete with the political officers and orders to shoot those not following orders.

If you really believe this, then you do not understand how the process works. I'll take a RINO to a "conservative" Dim any day. Frankly, there is no such thing as a "conservative" Democrat but that's beside the point.

The point is that first, we MUST have a majority and how we get there is secondary to just getting there.

Right now, I'd be thrilled to have Lugar back in place of Donnelly. I'd be thrilled to have Brown back in place of Warren, give me Snowe instead of Angus King, etc., etc., etc. You get the idea. Electing a Democrat instead of a RINO is NEVER a good idea. Which ever party is in the majority controls the agenda.

It is extremely disappointing to continually read these kinds of comments here on FR by those who obviously do not understand how the process works. Unfortunately, numbers are so tight, we do not have the luxury of ever voting for anyone other than a Republican.

This is political suicide and empowers Democrats. Are you sure that is what you want?

Amen, and amen!! Free Republic has become a huge disappointment because even though we all have the same goal, it seem too many don't have the foggiest idea of a way to outline a strategy to get where we want to go.

It is believed it is more virtuous to lose than to elect someone less than ideal. It is NEVER acceptable to allow a Democrat to defeat even the most liberal of Republicans. This is why we're in the morass we're in. We take any little victory--no matter how small.

All three of these people were better than the people they defeated......and all three were back stabbed by the rhino party leaders!!!

Akin backstabbed himself. He was done as soon as those words left his mouth.

O'Donnell was a hopeless candidate who never had a chance in that state.

It's an idiotic delusional fantasy that either would have won if it wasn't for Karl Rove or whatnot; they both lost by ENORMOUS margins; no amount of additional money provided by the party or verbal support would have made enough of a difference that they could have won.

Stupid or futile candidates lose because their stupid or futile, not because the party doesn't support them enough.

This is precisely why McCain lost, and why Romney lost, and why Christie or Jeb will lose. FUGOP

O’Donnell: According to party affiliation and exit polls, there was no way a Republican was gonna win Delaware 2010. Even Castle had no shot.

The exit polls had Coons beating Castle in a hypothetical matchup by ONLY ONE POINT. That not "no shot."

we gained a power despite losing- we proved that we are willing and able to unseat entrenched senators who oppose our will. That is a power and, IMHO, we should not be so quick to abandon this power just because we lost a few elections.
