Many years ago I had no washer/drier and every Wednesday, I filled up the huge claw foot bathtub and did our laundry.

One fill for washing, one fill for rinsing and then everything was hand-wrung and hung to dry outside.

Being more of an outdoorsy type than house-wifey, I was embarrassed by how wildly *happy* I was when we finally got a washer and drier.

I was horrified that I’d become “domesticated”.

;D

Being of school age into the lower side of twenty something meant to live spartan. You could pick up and go anywhere at the drop of a hat. You owned nothing and nothing owned you. Come and go as you pleased, answering to nobody outside your own convictions..........

Today my kids attend school with housemates with power juicers, yoga mats, WII gaming systems, flat screen TV's, cappuccino makers, bicycles they leave in the living room unused, bread machines, 400 count sheets, clothing to fill an attic, cats, massaging chairs, and more ridiculous nonsense than could be inventoried.

My days of a sleeping bag on the floor, a bar of soap in the shower for you, your hair, and your clothes, and yes...........peeing in the shower, were the times I was the most free.
