Many, many years ago, in Organic Chemistry, the text was Morrison and Boyd. The one quote I remember to this day is as follows:

"The manufacture of soap is one of the oldest of chemical syntheses. (It is not nearly so old as the manufacture of alcohol; apparently, man's desire for cleanliness is much newer than his desire for drunkenness.)"
