It is difficult today to believe the level of rioting and violence directed at a single black veteran trying to enroll at the University of Mississippi in 1962. A longtime Republican, Meredith later worked on Sen. Jesse Helms' staff.

Mr. Meredith was shot by a coward (err, sniper). Other marchers, journalists, and photographers scrambled for cover, leaving Mr. Meredith to pull himself to cover.

By the way, did you know that Mr. Meredith once said that liberal whites were the 'greatest enemy' of American blacks?
