Looking to beat Feinstein's ban -- AR-15 Recommendations? (Vanity)
FR ^ | 12/18/2012 | SnakeDoctor

Since I've been hearing rumblings about Feinstein reviving her dumbassed assault weapons ban, and I have limited confidence in the spine of the GOP Congress -- I'm in the market for an AR-15. My wife was going to get me a crossbow or 30-06 sniper rifle for my 10th wedding anniversary this month (she's definitely a keeper) ... but neither of those are likely to be banned, so I'll move the AR up the list.

I looked at a local tactical firearms dealer yesterday evening. They had a DPMS/Panther Arms military-spec AR-15 with a rail system in 5.56 for a little less than $750 ... which is quite a bit less than I expected. I don't know much about DPMS/Panther Arms. They also had a Stag Arms, not sure of the price, though.

I want a good all-purpose assault rifle. Preferably something that is good both long-range and short, and with the ability to handle attachments, sights, scopes, foregrips, lights, etc.

So, what are your recommendations? Are Panther and Stag good brands? What is the best bang for your buck? If the gun is military-spec, does the brand make much difference?

I'm more familiar with Colt and Bushmaster, and, though I'd love to get an FN SCAR or HK416 ... those are probably out of my price range at the moment.

Thoughts?

They are not assault rifles. They are rifles.

If I take my bolt action .22 Marlin and what you over the head with it, I suppose it has just become an Assault Rifle.

I’m in the market for a tactical weapon, not a hunting rifle. Call it whatever you want.

Most of your major mfgs are going to be solid platforms. Look for the features you want before buying. For instance, do you want Picatinny rails, collapsible stock, optics, lights, foregrip, additional mags?

I’m personally buying a lower-priced flattop DPMS for $975 and buying the accessories I want after the fact. Many stores will tack on accessories and jack up the price over double what it’s worth for accessories that are 10% of what’s being asked. Do your research, find what you like, get you a crate of quality ammo and some spare mags, and go to town!

Tactical is a great name. Assault rifle is a media, left wing propoganda moniker given these rifles. Is a Ruger 10/22 all tricked out in tactical furniture an assault rifle? Yup, if you listen to the left.

I’d recommend an AR-10 or a Saiga. A .223 round is simply crap IMHO and very expensive.

Get something with more reach like a Springfield Armory M1A in one of it's many configurations. I like the scout model for its short 18" barrel. I wouldn't own a poodle shooter with the possible exception of something for four legged varmints.

I didn’t think I was the only one thinking this, I’ve been shopping online gun stores today for an AR, hopefully the stupid people will squawk a bit and then stop making noise after this fades from the news.

The Ruger Mini-14 line has some interesting models from the nondescript Ranch to the Mini-Thirty, a 7.62 carbine on an assault style frame.

Forget the details. Just get a lower or two or three, and build them up how you want them later. The lower is considered the firearm by ATF so your foot is in the door. Cost should be under $150 each. Everything else is just an unregulated parts. They build easy with no special tools, anyone can do it.

You’re not the only one. The tactical weapons dealer I visited yesterday has a whole wall of AR15s, half-empty. The dealer said there wasn’t an empty space on the wall last Friday morning.

Having put a hundred or so rounds through a friends Springfield M1A, I couldnt agree more. It was a real joy to shoot and an AR felt like a toy when compared to it. Their accuracy and reliability is stuff of battlefield legend. The only drawback is the price. Dont they retail around $1200? My friend paid like $1200 to $1300 for his rifle but it also came with a Springfield pistol.

This M1A is often overlooked, typically because it doesnt have the “assault rifle” look. I think that is a good thing. Libs think its a hunting rifle.

If you find one in good shape for $1,200, buy it. You got a bargain. I think they’re closer to $2,000 and worth it. Ever notice how many of the mass killers have their M16 look-alikes jam?

I wondering if the Newtown shooter ran out of ammo for the Bushmaster or if it jammed.
