Florida offers prizes for python hunters

DAVIE, Fla.,- Florida wildlife officials are fighting Burmese pythons with a contest offering $1,000 and $1,500 prizes for catching the snakes.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission said the 2013 Python Challenge, which begins Jan. 12, will offer $1,000 to the winner who catches the longest Burmese python on public hunting lands and $1,500 for the participant who catches the largest amount of the snakes, the South Florida Sun Sentinel reported Thursday.

Officials said Jan. 12 will feature a daylong open house on the pythons and other invasive species at the University of Florida's Davie campus.

"The (Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission) is encouraging the public to get involved in helping us remove Burmese pythons from public lands in south Florida," said Kristen Sommers, head of the commission's Exotic Species Coordination Section. "By enlisting both the public and Florida's python permit holders in a month-long competitive harvesting of Burmese pythons, we hope to motivate more people to find and harvest these large, invasive snakes."

Are they edible?

Can you make a pair of boots out of the skins?

Seems like there should be a market for them.

“permit” “capture”

How about open season dead or alive no permit needed.

Florida authorities are idiots. They routinely complain about invasive species but let people otherwise own many exotic species. Guess what, dimwit officials: when these exotic species escape or more often are let loose by bored owners they breed like rabbits, and become a threat to the ecosystem.

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Instead of complaining about being over-run by invasive species try banning their sale and ownership in the first instance.

If your Python boots are too tight it can lead to Stinkfoot.

They had a story about this on the local (Panama City) news.

It actually is dead or alive. They just don’t stress the dead part in reports.

Will they offer prizes to people who fail to catch a python? After all, we don’t want to hurt their feelings... :)

Put a $200 cash bounty on their heads, no limit and no permit / license required. Problem solved.

I was thinking of these guys

Roy: The mosquito's a clever little bastard. You can track him for days and days until you really get to know him like a friend. He knows you're there, and you know he's there. It's a game of wits. You hate him, then you respect him, then you kill him.

Hank: Well, I follow the moth in the helicopter to lure it away from the flowers, and then Roy comes along in the Lockheed Starfighter and attacks it with air-to-air missiles.

Roy: A lot of people have asked us why we don't use fly spray. Well, where's the sport in that?
