WHEN hip-hop superstar Jay-Z boarded a crowded subway to his show in Brooklyn everybody knew who he was.
Everybody except for the person sitting next to him.
In Jay-Z's new 24-minute YouTube documentary Where I'm From, a woman named Ellen innocently asks Mr Beyonce: "are you famous?" as he takes his seat.
Jay-Z, taken aback, politely replies: "Yes. Not very famous you don't know me."
"I'll get there some day."
He then tells Ellen he makes music and that he's on the way to his eighth and final show.
"I'm on my way to the performance in Brooklyn and the new Brooklyn arena."
Jay-Z declines to mention he's a part owner of the Barclays Center Arena, nor does he reveal himself to be a part owner of the NBA team which plays there - the Brooklyn Nets.
Ellen is clearly stunned that a man with obvious wealth still takes the subway, then asks him to repeat his name.
"Jay... Jay-Z," he says, before she quickly cuts in: "Oh, you're Jay-Z! Yes, I know about Jay-Z!"
Of course she does.
I recognize the name but wouldn’t know his music if I heard it or his face if I saw him in person.
RE: the security detail shut down regular visitors of the babies ward for a few days.
If you are being hounded by the Paparazzi and reporters are annoying you and your wife no end after the birth of your baby just to get the scoop and first pics, I wouldn’t blame you for asking for special security.
I betcha Prince William and Duchess Kate will have the same security detail 9 months from now.
RE: You probably know him by his real name, Shawn Carter, LOL.
That of course, is his REAL name.
For those who don’t know, The moniker, Jay-Z is an homage to his musical mentor, Jaz-O, as well as to the J/Z subway lines that have a stop at Marcy Avenue in Brooklyn.
Shawn Carter was originally from Marcy Houses, a housing project in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn.
She had a multi-Grammy award winning singer recently that asked her to pull up a chair (restaurant had shut down) and just talked with her for 30 minutes.....
My great granddaughters (3 yr. olds) know John Wayne very well :) Thanks to their Papa who sits with them & watches the old movies!!
I wish FR had a “like” button...
I have no problem with security detail, but for the other patients in the hospital who had babies and wanted to see their own children and for their family and loved ones to visit their babies, it seems over the top. He could have had a private area for his family, but no, it had to protrude into the rest of the maternity wing. That’s when I call it ego. Look, maybe he’s changed, and I’m glad he is pleasant and tips nicely. I’m just saying the hospital thing was a fiasco if you were the poor families that couldn’t be with their own newborns.
I would bet the great majority of Americans over fifty could not identify Jay-Z or most of the other no-talent scam artists who pose as musicians. Popular music has been dead for about thirty years. I mean what “music” have these idiots produced that can be sung by average Americans like they used to do in the old days. Fifty years ago everybody knew what the number one song was. You’d hear it everywhee. Today there’s little produced that can even be called music. Another rant by an old fogey who regrets the passing of the age of popular music.
Cage was maybe the greatest “musical” scam artist of all time. He fooled a lot of people into thinking what he concocted was important. All the musical snobs thought Cage was a genius. I thought he was the biggest charlatan the music world ever experienced.
