‘Are you famous?' Woman doesn't recognise Jay-Z on New York subway (Watch Video)

WHEN hip-hop superstar Jay-Z boarded a crowded subway to his show in Brooklyn everybody knew who he was.

Everybody except for the person sitting next to him.

In Jay-Z's new 24-minute YouTube documentary Where I'm From, a woman named Ellen innocently asks Mr Beyonce: "are you famous?" as he takes his seat.

Jay-Z, taken aback, politely replies: "Yes. Not very famous you don't know me."

"I'll get there some day."

He then tells Ellen he makes music and that he's on the way to his eighth and final show.

"I'm on my way to the performance in Brooklyn and the new Brooklyn arena."

Jay-Z declines to mention he's a part owner of the Barclays Center Arena, nor does he reveal himself to be a part owner of the NBA team which plays there - the Brooklyn Nets.

Ellen is clearly stunned that a man with obvious wealth still takes the subway, then asks him to repeat his name.

"Jay... Jay-Z," he says, before she quickly cuts in: "Oh, you're Jay-Z! Yes, I know about Jay-Z!"

Of course she does.

Me either. I wouldn't know who he is, nor care.

Even if I knew, I would not give them the satisfaction of drooling over them or acknowledge them in any way.

I prefer to destroy their EGO's if possible.

It’s not a lie. He actually thinks that it is music. So did John Cage.

I ride the NYC subway quite frequently—and I’d never recognize him.

I’m damn proud to admit that I wouldn’t have known who he was either, OR what he’s supposedly famous for. If I had to guess, I’d say ‘rapper’.

a few years ago I was selling high end watches and Brad Arnold from 3 Doors Down came in and bought a couple watches. I had no idea who he was so I asked him what he did, said he was a musician, played in a rock and roll band, I asked him if I had ever heard of his band, he told me, I responded, my teenage cousins used to like you when they were little. He didn’t buy any watches. He was very nice though.

I don’t like his “music”, particularly some of the messages, but also the lack of melody, harmony, etc., but at least he seems to be a pretty good guy. Up from nothing (Brooklyn projects), instead of partying his way through his music career, he focused on the business such that he netted millions, as opposed to most rappers who blow it all on cars, drugs, women, etc., then invested that money into upgrading his hometown of Brooklyn with a new arena and basketball team, which he’ll likely profit from for years to come. A high profile marriage to Beyonce and publicly celebrated birth of their first child certainly sets a better example for the youth than the typical “baby momma” scenario. If more blacks followed his lead of hard work, financial discipline, and dedication to family and community, in other walks of life, things would probably improve greatly for many.

Of course it doesn’t excuse voting Democrat . . .

Compared to Jay-Z, Nicki Minaj, Trey Songz, etc , 4’33” is the finest music ever written.

My daughter is a waitress (college student) and she served him at the restaurant she works at here in Atlanta. She stated he was very polite and tipped well.

She has waited on many celebrities at the restaurant, management sends them her way since she can handle potentially difficult customers.... she's pretty tough but fair...Very quick wit and a sharp tongue...

She is incredibly beautiful which doesn't hurt....

I only know the name.

I don't know any of his so-called music.

And I wouldn't recognize him if he was sitting next to me.

With few exceptions, today's pop culture is a cesspool of filth and degradation.

Isn't Jay-Z one of Mr. and Mrs. 0sama’s favorites?

Thought so.

You and me, both. I bet I could not recognize about 85-90% of the so-called “stars” these days. And the only ones I might recognize would be those who hit it big at least 10-20 years ago. (And it would tick me off if some young “star” seemed to be arrogant enough to think I should know “who he is”...)

We might not like his music or his entertainment style or even his lousy politics, but based on this one incident in the subway and your daughter’s own experience, it looks like Jay-Z isn’t one of those high-falutin’ entertainers who is so full of himself, thinking the world revolves around them.

Maybe so, maybe not. I heard that when he and Beyonce had their baby, the security detail shut down regular visitors of the babies ward for a few days. Maybe he’s trying to change his image.
