Word For The Day, Monday, 12/3/12
In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
scurrilous; adj.
1. grossly or obscenely abusive or defamatory 2. characterized by gross or obscene humour
[C16: from Latin scurrīlis derisive, from scurra buffoon] Synonyms 1. vituperative, insulting, offensive. 2. vulgar
Etymology: "using such language as only the licence of a buffoon can warrant" [Johnson], 1576, from scurrile "coarsely joking" (1508, implied in scurrility), from L. scurrilis "buffoonlike," from scurra "fashionable city idler," later "buffoon." According to Klein, "an Etruscan loan-word."
Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.
The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....
Here is my example with WFTD.
It is the season for atheists to loudly mount their scurrilous attacks on Christmas. Buffoons is a good word for them.

No pushing at the door please!
morning.
Good morning. I was out past my “bedtime” at a wedding last night. I can’t believe I am up this morning. I am feeling sluggishly smug.
.......at least his minions are happy with this, while we approach the fiscal cliff.
I supposes Syracuse would have thought it scurrilous had they been “passed over” for Pitt in the Pinstripe Bowl.
I still think they missed a chance for a great bowl game.
September eleventh, 2012, a date on which the leader of the free world showed his hindmanship and scurrilously scurried away from responsibility like a squirrel scampering among the scattered leaves.
This one is too easy. Scurrilous: brings to mind the behavior of the Obama Administration both before and after the recent election.
Your village looks like a Currier and Ives print!
The fiscal cliff looming is perilous
But Obama’s solutions are nebulous
Deflect, cheat, and lie
Is how he gets by
Each attack on republicans, scurrilous
seriously? that’s not photoshopped? good grief. A+++
what were the possibilities? i didn’t follow it. I know SU is going to the Pinstripe bowl, i thought Pitt was going to that bowl, but xshub said SU is playing WVU?
A father and daughter in their holiday finery headed to Cotillion for the Holly Ball.
now i KNOW that’s got to be photoshopped or airbrushed, bc i KNOW upstate NY! LOL!!!
A+++ and he’s getting away with it, which is what drives me absolutely insane.
A+++
A+++ and there is no mistaking that he is her father, bc she looks exactly like him!!
And is there any mistaking that that is Richmond, VA. Where else in this country would there be a program called “Cotillion” where 13 year old girls wear white gloves?
During the Primaries, I had my own theories as to the origins of the scurrilous attacks on the more conservative Republican Candidates.
that was a fine looking birthday cake, though i couldn’t figure out why it said David and not SOOTHER ; ) did you have a good bday? i enjoyed myself on your bday. The girls and i went to King of Prussia to shop, had lunch there, and then went on down to the U of Delaware for xsboy’s game. They were stomped by the Blue Hens, 7-0, but it was still good to be able to see one of his games. Avg age of player on the DE team is 22, since their freshmen have generally played two years of junior hockey before going to college, so they were all huge and way older than the SU squad. the hens also won the championship last year, so it wasn’t terribly surprising. it was a 5 hour bustrip each way for the team. We sat a few rows behind the SU bench and had to inhale that stench for the duration of the game which is three 20 min periods, just like the NHL.
