Doomsday Preppers are Socially Selfish (emergency mgmt. college)

You might wonder why someone like me, who has been in the business of encouraging disaster preparedness for a very long time, is so critical of people who are doing just that. It’s because they are being socially selfish – preparing themselves and the hell with everyone else. Instead of spending time and energy making changes that would benefit the larger community, in their very narrow focus of loyalty they are more concerned about themselves.

Emergency Managers can’t afford that kind of attitude. It is diametrically opposed to everything we do. Our job is to prepare individuals and communities and jurisdictions and regions and – ultimately – the globe for disasters, knowing we won’t always succeed. I could find statistics about how unprepared some citizens are, and then show you hundreds of active and volunteer CERT teams preparing whole communities. In major disasters (think 9-11 or the Christ Church earthquake or Superstorm Sandy), survivors for the most part WANT to help each other.

some of those Texan's can be quite scary

Good. We like to keep the libs scared.

Let's compare how NO fared after Katrina and how Texan's pulled THEMSELVES up by their bootstraps and got on with life without all the whining and complaining that NO did.

You can get your very own Prepper score!

Uh, no thanks.

This is why:
1. Don’t reveal you are prepping.
2. Don’t reveal you have a prepper’s attitude.
3. You don’t have any guns. They all were sold.

Is there such a thing as a long haired Basset? Neighbors have one, beautiful dog. Can’t decide if he’s a cross with some sort of spaniel, purebred or what. Looks and acts purebred other than the coat.

There's a test? Oh my... I love tests. Back in a flash with a score.

I should read entire articles, sometimes.

This woman thinks survival of the human race should be an all-or-nothing proposition.

We should all die together!!

This is her idea of saving the species??? Seriously??

Yo Lady.... for the human race to survive the worst, get this.... aat least some humans have to survive the disaster... the GOVERNMENT does not have to survive... at least SOME people have to.

There is a French breed that is a long haired Basset Hound, let’s see if I can remember the name without getting my dog book. Petite Giffon Vendene or something like that. There used to be a woman who walked 2 of these dogs not far from my house. Beautiful dogs.

I know he was running loose one morning and I really tried to take him back home with me, lol. I’m far enough out that city people think it’s the country, ignoramuses periodically dump pets that are no longer wanted here, I have a soft spot for them. Couldn’t figure out why someone would dump that one, though. Really pretty dog. Turns out he was just on the lam temporarily.

Read up on the “grey man” survival system. It advocates keeping a low profile and keeping quiet.

;~)

Here's a crazy idea FEMA - everyone should be prepared for some modest level of disaster, whatever is appropriate for their area. If someone chooses not to be prepared, to blow their time and resources on trivial pursuits, I feel no need to share my resources with them, to reward their bad choices. Darwinism at work. I will defend my family and resources with deadly force rather than place my family in mortal jeopardy or allow someone else to do the same in an emergency.

There are FReepers that believe the same thing. They pop-up on threads from time to time.

If you look through the Prepper post or asking any of the 450 plus members of the Prepper Ping list and they will tell you that you will find you will find examples of these angry anti-prepper types even here on FR.
I have a number of times posted about three types of people that I like to warn about, the first two are the “I’ve got lots of guns and plenty of ammo and I’ll just take what I need.” and the “I don’t prep because I don’t believe anything is going to happen, but if it does preppers should share with me”, which is more or less the type covered in this article.
Call many of these people on their post and many will backdown or just not respond in their embarrassment, but many will reply back in righteous anger the same anger that you see in this article ‘grasshoppers’who are shocked and infuriated by ‘ants’ who won’t readily share with all.. Even though many of us do share, we just we don’t to the point of endangering our own families or helping those who won’t do for themselves.
Now as I said some the “I’ll take what I want crowd” when confronted will often back off saying things like “I was just joking”, but I don’t believe it. When I read their post I can’t help but think of this quote from one of my favorite westerns ’Open Range’: “Most times a man will tell you his bad intentions if you listen, let yourself hear.” I’ve ‘heard’ their intentions and they aren’t good.
The third type that I warn about are those who wish to bring God’s Armageddon into the discussion as if they know that it will be God’s will should some catastrophe befall us. They claim this despite the fact that the history of man is full of direr times which were caused by nature or man himself. History has shown us all too well that men do not need God to help them muck things up to a point were their fellows cry out for God to end it all and relieve them of their misery. Some of these I like to ask: “Do you wear a seatbelt when you drive or ride in a car? Do you have car insurance?” And if they reply yes then I tell them their faith must not be as strong as they claim.
The real problem with the ‘its God’s will’ crowd is that many of them will want to see you punished as they will see your prepping as you trying to dodging God’s punishment. This group along with the “I don’t prep, but you should share” group will be among the first to report you and your ‘hoarding’ to the powers that be in their efforts to make sure you too suffer just as they do. The first group because as I said they see you as trying to escape the rightful wrath of God (as if they know the Lord’s mind) and the second because you proved them wrong.
You can be fairly certain that all three groups will hate you as they will be quick to blame you for the ‘troubles’ because in their twisted way of thinking your prepping brought the ‘troubles’ and therefore you need to be punished for your transgressions.

Yup, if you don’t voluntarily give it up, they’ll take it by force. That’s why you have to have enough other prepared people helping you that have weapons and ammo.

Just reply, “I’m selfish because you’re unprepared?”

Or “I’m selfish because I budget for trouble, and you don’t?”
