I sent this to the whole school board
.........
After reading a news report about a recent incident at Davis Elementary I was flabberghasted that this whole program was still happening. You probably know the incident I am referring to, a child was denied a trip to the bathroom because he didn’t have enough “Boyd bucks”. Maybe he had just spent them on stickers or something.
Children cannot control WHEN they have to go to the bathroom. I think teachers who know the kids in their classroom would be able to tell the good kids and bad kids apart and know if the kid was telling the truth. Like I said, you cannot put their bladders on a schedule.
They aren’t learning discipline when they are forced to dig through their desks desperate to find these “bucks” as the whole class watches and then traumatized and humiliated as the whole class watches him pee his pants. The only thing that kid learns is not to trust teachers and will probably start hating school. Letting a kid go to the bathroom is a lot less disruptive than having all of that happen. Especially if they empty the class and have it cleaned.
Why was I shocked to see this was going on?
Because the same thing happened to me in the late 70’s. I attended Schulze Elementary (okay probably others too since we moved a lot). It was the exact same kind of thing. It is a stupid idea to give kids “bucks” and let them spend it on goodies and trinkets if you then make them pee their pants because they no longer can buy an emergency bathroom break.
Bathroom breaks should be teachers discretion with the knowledge that kids can’t always hold it, especially since doing this a lot can bring on Urinary Tract problems. The emergency bathroom break should not be dependent on something as -yes- STUPID as “Boyd bucks”. I would rather expect the teachers to be adults and be able to make this decision by their own discretion.
Sincerely,
