“Bambis couldn’t stay away from them...no matter [human hair, dried blood, urine, commercial sprays, burlap covers] would they stay away. It was non-stop ‘til there was nothing left for them to eat. Buggers! ...and so bold about it!”
Like you we tried everything. From human hair to human urine, lion poop, coyote poop, Iris spring soap.
The last expensive attempt was the liquid fence. A very expensive liquid apparently with a lot of garlic. The deer must have had Italian blood/dna as they loved it. Our yard guy brought some 5 kelvan rating hot sauce. He didn’t want us to use it incase we got it on us. He added it to the Liquid Fence. Then the Deer with the Hispanic DNA chowed down.
Then, we added sour milk, and that didn’t work. Next rotten eggs which didn’t work. The only critters repelled were us due to the horrible aroma. So I washed the stuff off and into the ground. We caught some deer chewing on the what used to be the top soil before our chemical witches’s brew was added.
Nothing worked. Ca Fish and Game understands that now. If deer are eating a vineyard or other crop, F&G tells the owners to put up an 8’ high deer fence around the vineyard or crop area. If the deer jump over, then they can shoot them.
A couple of years ago, I was steelhead fishing and staying in a motel in a small town at the edge of town. Next to the motel, was a small farm and the owners had put up an expensive 8’ deer fence. I was sitting outside and watched the deer leap over the fence and into the crop to feed.
The owners came over and got my name, address and phone # to be witnesses for F&G. That worked and they had pro archers come in after we left with F&G’s blessings to harvest the deer.
As noted we need longer seasons and to make does legal to take. F&G is trying that in some counties with doe permits for the under 18 but licensed hunters. One of our younger relatives got drawn for a either sex hunt and got a doe. Does taste even better than the bucks.
We certainly know all the stuff that *doesn't* work!
