I’m good at math and I know the odds are horrendous but I have one chance rather than none. At least in my state the proceeds go to college tuition.

The lottery is a tax on people who are bad at math. For many people their life would be a million times better if they won $550 million and only 0.01% worse if they lost $2. It's not so clear that buying a single ticket is a bad investment.
