I'll give the customary advice - find a local range and inquire about ladies-only classes. Try out multiple rental firearms and find out what fits you best. Buy one and practice, practice, practice.

It's likely to be a revolver but not necessarily (especially not if the bug bites). My Mom's firearm of choice is a sturdy Smith and Wesson Ladysmith in .38/.357 magnum. She's 83.
