I had to deliver Otis Spunkmeyer cookies to one Korean liquor store in Compton in 1999 and to the South Central L.A. U.S. Postal Megaplex. It always surprised me how the populace goes from all-white south of CSULB to all-black to the north.
My aunt grew up in Compton. At the time, it was an agricultural community surrounded by dairy farms. The Long Beach Earthquake of March 10, 1933 hit the town hard and sent her fleeing to Santa Ana Canyon, where there was less danger of an aftershock. There, she met my uncle. Their marriage lasted 62 years.
