Bounce houses a party hit but kids' injuries soar

They may be a big hit at kids' birthday parties, but inflatable bounce houses can be dangerous, with the number of injuries soaring in recent years, a nationwide study found. Kids often crowd into bounce houses, and jumping up and down can send other children flying into the air, too...

Gary Smith, director of the Center for Injury Research and Policy at Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus, Ohio...

The safety commission recommends against letting children younger than 6 use full-size trampolines, and Smith said barring kids that young from even smaller, home-use bounce houses would make sense. "There is no evidence that the size or location of an inflatable bouncer affects the injury risk," he said. Other recommendations, often listed in manufacturers' instruction pamphlets, include not overloading bounce houses with too many kids and not allowing young children to bounce with much older, heavier kids or adults, said Laura Woodburn, a spokeswoman for the National Association of Amusement Ride Safety Officials. ..

Bounce house injuries are similar to those linked with trampolines, and the American Academy of Pediatrics has recommended against using trampolines at home. Policymakers should consider whether bounce houses warrant similar precautions, the authors said.

The only time I’ve seen kids playing outside in my neighborhood was when Sandy took the power out...

My grandson broke his arm in a trampoline accident but 20 some years earlier my son broke his collarbone tripping off an 8 inch step.

Steps are dangerous.

The bounce house is not dangerous. It’s the kids doing things the place wasn’t designed for.
The only reason anyone is talking about this is that there is SOMEONE TO SUE! The manufacturer, or the business that runs the things.

Years ago, in a world that we will never see again, kids played on home made swings. Nobody sued when kids got hurt. Everybody knew that it was the kids’ own fault. No one thought of suing the ropemaker or the owner of the tree from which the seat was made.

These products have become a huge target for ambulance-chasing trial lawyers.

Yeah, and we also rode bikes sans stupid helmets. I rode miles and once I broke my arm when I hit a car at the end of my driveway. Never cracked my head.

I’m not buying a helmet for my son unless he wants it. No fun, and a waste of time when you want to GO.

question.. what isn't?
except smarter/more experienced lawyers.
these lawyers (the former) are of the lowest caliber.

when i was 8 in 1959 i was going to a little league game with my dad. i dashed across the street w/o looking and ran into the side of a moving car. i bounced back across the street ending up on the curb. my dad and the driver came over. he asked me a few questions, didn’t see any blood, looked at the driver and said “he’s fine. it’s his fault. go on.” i also fell off the monkey bars showing off, the only thig my dad said was “good thing you hit your head on the lower bar before hitting the asphalt or you might have busted your head open.”
