A few of my family said that at some point in history Republicans became and Democrats and vise-versa.

This is the old "neoconservative" ploy.

What actually happened is that when the socialist effectively took over the democrat party many of the patriotic American democrats moved over to the Republican party. None of the Republicans became democrats.

An example would be Ronald Reagan who famously said " I didn't leave the democrat party, they left me".
