According to another FReeper it’s not what you’d expect:

Q:

“But are you saying that even after switching to the conventional desktop that conventional laptops and desktops are not usable with W8?”

A:

“Correct. No Start Menu on conventional desktop, running the mouse into various corners and sides of the screen cause various popout menus to appear, and some of those hiddend and fateful mouse positions and various other activities can cause the conventional desktop to be repeatedly replaced with the useless Metro UI.”

Windows 8?

John Dvorak, an long time industry analyst and commentator gave W8 a bad review.

I’m shopping for a new desktop PC.

I have a 4 yr old ZT Systems (via big box store Costco) desktop PC with Windows Vista. Vista was “ok” but not as good as Windows XP. So I upgraded to Windows 7 which is ok except Windows Explorer does not always find files that I actually do have.

So I contacted ZT Systems and asked if I could order a PC with W7. The ZT Systems sales rep said no, that all new PC’s came with W8. No option for W7, etc.

So they lost a sale because I went to Best Buy (W8 or nothing there). I tried a couple W8 desktops, one a touch screen and one not. I did not like W8.

I am a professional programmer and could figure W8 out and work with it, but using W8 was like wearing ill-fitting clothes. Not really satisfying, but rather a little annoying.

W8 makes Windows Vista seem good by comparison.

Instead we are going to have a custom desktop built with either XP or W7.

Windows 8 seems a good choice for a Tablet, but a poor choice for a desktop.

I think W8 is Microsoft’s idea of a “one size fits all” OS.

W8 sales are probably as good as they are because Microsoft is shoving W8 down everyone’s throat and denying a W7 option.
