I have become tired of living in the People's Republic of Kalifornia and am looking to move when I retire in three years. I visited Prescott AZ this summer and was impressed by the life style.
Any opinions by people who live or have lived in the Prescott area?
I am planning to check out Prescott in the winter and spring.
Thanks in advance.
My parents have lived in Prescott since 1995, and they love it. They usually like the weather, cost of living, and low crime rate. Most of the time that they’ve lived there, they’ve had a republican congressman, republican state senator, and republican state rep.
Don’t know anything about the place except that Sturm, Ruger is based there. That alone makes it my kinda town.
Prescott, I’d consider red with occasional lefty transplant. I visit often being from the valley its a weekend get away. The winter months get snow but not like the rim country or Flagstaff. I love the small lakes. Great for kayaking. The summers are much cooler than Metro Phoenix. Would live there if I could , but thanks to Obamanomics I wont be retiring till I’m dead.
Maybe but if I were you I would be looking at all the crime stats from Arizona in general. They are being over run by the thugs from the southern ‘neighbor’. The kidnappings, assaults, killings, and other atrocities in Arizona don’t get much play in the national media but it is not getting better there. If Mexi-fornia is no longer your cup of tea remember that southern California is being over run too. It is just that the powers that be in California think it is a good thing.
Oops it’s BASED in Southport CT but they have a casting/manufacturing plant in Prescott. I’m not as smart as I thought I was....
I agree about the weather. My dad told me that, usually, Prescott’s high temp. is the same as Phoenix’s low temp., for the same day.
Not even close! We open carry, we conceal carry. We’ve got Sheriff Joe! Most crime is in the city limits. Us suburbanites don’t see much of it.
Build your own place on the Ruger Ranch property. Bargains from foreclosures and stuff. Great owners Lodge...

My family lives there now, and I visit pretty regularly. It is a nice town, but the Republicans that run the town are of the “good old boy” variety, with the attendant corruption and cronyism. Though, you’d probably find the same thing with most small towns.
There are quite a few lefties from CA and other places that live there, along with hippy dippy Prescott College students majoring in Granola Sciences. So, be prepared for a few weirdos in the mix. For example, Howard Mechanic, a 60’s radical that got pardoned by Clinton, lives there and is active in the Dem party there.
Prescott is home to a conservative shrine—the Yavapai County Court House, where Barry Goldwater began each of his campaigns with an address on the north side of the building.

Now some stats:
Arizona as a state went for Romney 55% to 43% for Obama (after rounding).
Yavapai County (Prescott is the county seat) went for Romney 65% to 33%. This is the third best RED county in the state. Only Graham County and Mohave County outdid it.
I happen to live in Mohave County near the Grand Canyon and Lake Mead. Mohave County went 70.4% Romney.
I'm damn proud of that.
The owners do live in or around Prescott. My sister did some work for the heir to the Ruger dynasty, and got to peak at his private collection of firearms :)
It is! Plus it’s just a little over an hours drive for me.
Yes, it’s usually about 15 degrees cooler than Phoenix temps. They get snow in the winter, but the nice thing is, as soon as the sun comes up, it just evaporates, so no shoveling. The bad part is, nobody there knows how to drive in snow, so even with a light dusting, you are going to see a lot of cars that have skidded right off the road.
When we were researching a place to relocate, we found a lot of good info here:
Give it a shot; it can’t hurt.
Other than Free Republic, that's my favorite website.
“In what officials caution is now a dangerous and even deadly crime wave, Phoenix, Arizona has become the kidnapping capital of America, with more incidents than any other city in the world outside of Mexico City and over 370 cases last year alone. “ on that was 2/2009
In April 2010 the news reporting was that Arizona was proposing its 1070 bill in response to the increased crime rate (including home invasions, robbery, and rape) and lack of federal enforcement of the border.
I don't know what town you live in but ranchers have been murdered by those coming across the border. Your border is porous because of the feds (and ask Brian Terry about violence along the border....oh that's right you can't)
The hordes are coming and they are crossing into Arizona, New Mexico,California, and Texas and spreading out from there
