We decided to do that years ago. We've been "off the grid" for awhile, though we keep access to all the fun stuff as long as we can afford it.
We saw how well the freeloaders were living on our money, so we decided to stop giving it to them. We deliberately keep our income below the legal poverty limit to avoid the taxes.
If the scrounges want free stuff for doing nothing, they're going to have to look somewhere else. They're not going to get a penny from us - Not if we can help it!
I think the key to our comfortable lifestyle is growing our own food. That almost eliminates a grocery bill (though sometimes we need a few things. I cook from scratch, so not much). We chop wood, so we have no heating bill. We have a lot on nonelectric gadgets, so electric use is low.
We do what we can "to help".

Interesting. While netsurfing for sewing machines I noticed that beautiful new treadle machines are being made. I was surprised to read reviews by people who love them; it’ll help them in their efforts to be self sufficient, and not helpless in a long-term emergency.
I found that the less I depended upon income and paying taxes, the less I needed to live on.
Right now I am living “Relatively” high on the hog based on what others are doing.
I am more (MORE) than comfortable and have plenty of cash to invest. I never could have done that when worrying about what the government was telling me what I could and could not do.

BUT
to really be effective you MUST help us BLEED the system as much as possible so apply for Social Security, Food stamps, etc......
The quicker the government collapses the better it is for everyone. Then we can get back to Constitutional Government and Freedom.
Don’t pay taxes. Barter. Grow your own food. ETC.
But help your fellow citizens by putting a stop to BIG GOVERNMENT CORRUPTION by bleeding it to death.
Let us return to Freedom and the Constitution and the only (ONLY) way to do that is to take, take, take until they dry up.
The sooner we dry up the money supply the quicker the scroungers (as you call them) will have to start working or starve).
Help by fighting, not by giving in.
