I think we are going to have to move away for awhile from the social issues of abortion and gay marriage. The young generation wants gay marriage and they want birth control and abortion on demand. The fact Akin and Mourdock got wiped out in Red States is telling,

However, with the debt crisis coming, I think we’ve got to focus on that issue. As the debt crisis takes over, young people might be persuaded that a free market and austerity is better than the full bore socialism that Obama will try to take us down.

Frankly, I can’t worry about the unborn and gays marrying if the economy here has collapsed. Because if he economic system collapses we have no freedom at all.

No one was trying to take birth control--this was decided by the Supreme Court decades ago. Despite the Democrat's framing, it was a debate whether the individuals involved or someone other party should be responsible for paying. Women seem to have decided they want "free stuff" without understanding the consequences.

Abortion is about life itself. This is not a compromise issue but idiots like Akin and Mourdock are not serious candidates able to articulate a positive prolife view effectively. Such people need to be vetted and rejected at the primary level. The Tea Party movement, if it survives going forward, needs to grow up.

You're right about the demographics and young people's view on marriage. Conservatives need to find a way to address this because it isn't gay marriage threatening the institution, the heterosexual institution itself has been allowed to crumble for decades. Rather than rant and scream that 'gay marriage' is wrong, evil, destroying traditional marriage, etc it's time to realize the culture is elsewhere and accelerating in that other direction.

That ship sailed in the 90s; the state constitutional amendments were likely a last stand that will not prevail against the demographic tide. Conservatives need to move to where the puck will be not where it is or was. They sound like the teachers on Peanuts.
