(Reddit.com) A woman had enough money to pay for a $138.35 bill, but not enough to handle 15 percent more than that. The explanation written in the tip line, Single Mom Sorry. An online discussion has broken out around the country after the included photo surfaced on Reddit.
The photo was posted by editor PhenixSongFawkes on the online forum. He wrote, Im sure $140 could have gotten you and your kids a week worth of groceries, but instead you spend it one one meal?! For shame!
That tends to be the general sentiment of comment posters on Reddit and other social media sites, with most insinuating that if the woman could afford a $140 bill, she could probably afford to add a somewhat-obligatory 15 percent tip, which would total $21.

Not knowing the real circumstances of the "mom", I'm giving her the benefit of the doubt since tips aren't mandatory. Who knows, this may have been her first night out in months..........
Under the current economic conditions today, who really cares how much anyone gives in tips anyway? The restaurants and servers should feel grateful that people are still eating out.........
Oh, yeah. I hated those gift certs. And one night I had to work on prom night. AAaarrgh!! Bunch of 17-year-old boys spending their Christmas money on their dates dinner. They paid the bill to the penny and I think I left with $3 that night after working my tail off from 4-9. That’ll pay the rent!
My great grandmother was a single mom after her husband disappeared during the depression.
She taught me that expectation often leads to disappointment.
It doesn’t really look like the same handwriting.
Someone who writes script, why would they print that portion?
Look at the o’s, both round and open, but the bottom writing are closed narrow letters. Same thing with the g.
I say fake.
She/He could have left a cash tip. I usually leave cash tips and don’t put it on my debit, because I know some places the servers have to wait to get CC tips.
Some places pool tips. Maybe they pocketed the cash tip and wrote in the note. Then maybe somebody else posted the image online.
All of those you list MAY be single moms as well. I have a good friend, who is widowed, she calls herself a widow, if discussing her marital status and a single mom if discussing her parental status.
Saw that on reddit. If I hadn’t been on my ipad, I probably would’ve had a lot to say about it, but I prefer typing longer comments, without the frickin’ autocorrect replacing words with things like “fricking’”.
It’s moral theft. Accepting service from someone and refusing to pay for it in a situation where established convention is to pay for the service. If the service was poor, then it’s not theft. But if you appreciate the service and still refuse to pay, you are morally a thief, regardless of what the law says.
If you don’t like your pay, get a better job. If service/food sucks, no tip.
I have no problem with that. But that is not what the current situation is.
You go to a restaurant, you expect to be served. The restaurant owner allows you the courtesy of paying for the service as you see fit. With service included in the price, prices will go up, service will go down.
And nobody is forced to eat at an establishment that works this way. It is the ultimate free-market, libertarian, capitalist system - you pay for what you receive....after you get it.
Conservative high school and college kids take waitstaff and other such jobs to help them pay their bills and tuition expenses.
By implication, you have haughtily declared them to be “imbeciles” for taking a job that pays $1-2 an hour rather than wait for a government handout that pays more than that.
No, I am saying minimum wage laws should apply to them.
You can get up on your indignent high-horse all you want - you’re still wrong.
YOU choose to go to a restaurant and be served.
YOU know that the tip is part of the total bill - and
YOU don’t pay for what you received.
YOU are wrong.
PS - even in rural areas, serving staff earn their money through tips. You should worry about spit (and worse) in your soup if you are a repeat customer - because nobody in the restaurant likes you very much.
Tipping used to be a way of rewarding good service. Now it is just a pain in the ass.
And you can be a self righteous piece of garbage and I’ll still laugh at your idiot ass for getting all upset about something you saw on the internet that may not even be real.
LOL
So you’ve gone your whole life without tipping? Wow, I’m embarrassed for you. Most people in our society understand that you tip the waiter.
Back in the late 1990s when I was waiting tables I think I made $2.38/hour, which was the going rate in my state and much less than minimum wage. Like everyone else, I made my money through tips, not wage.
If you’re not going to tip, then I suggest you stick to drive-thru burger joints. That way you’re not unknowingly screwing someone out of their livelihood.
If you received lousy service, leave 10% and complain to the manager.
If the service is bad enough to warrant a complaint, I don’t tip. For minimal good service, I tip about 20%.
When I frequent an establishment I tend to get excellent service because the staff knows I’ll treat them right.
