Weekly Preppers'Thread to post progress, good buys, DIY projects, advice and ideas ...
LED lights are awesome as you can use “supposedly dead”
batteries from other devices to power them.
I am slowly moving all my house lighting to LED lights.
I have replaced my Refrigerator bulbs with LED lights as they don;t generate heat for my fridge to work against.
Better timing would have been if they had done it before the calamity. Those who haven't should read William R. Forstchen's One Second After. That's what got me thinking early on.
Looks like I messed up and look at last weeks ad by mistake!! DUH!
Some of my stuff is custom, like the red leds I use for blackout, and IR leds that I use for night vision, but the white light leds are mostly off-the-shelf without me having to build/modify anything.

I am not worrying about tues since i will be voting early that morning and bugging out towards Bismarck. Should be on my uncle’s farm before most people even vote. Prepping is just a way of life in rural ND.
There are for sure $3.83 at Walmart here.
I am cinsuidering building a WHITE LED (red neck XRAY ) device that is bright enough to shine through flesh for helping re-set bone fractures and other scanning purposes.
You can see how this works by shining a bright LED light flashlight through your fingers, you can see the main blood vessels, bones, etc... I figure with a bright enough beam you can shine it though an arm or leg and use it to help re-set broken bones etc...
Basically taking a “breadboard” and filling it with ultra bright WHITE or RED LED bulbs and putting it in a box that is faced with a plexi-glass and thin film that is tranlucent without pressure but when pressed against the plexiglass allows the ight to shine through.
Nonetheless, I’ll keep watching for it. Sounds like they run this special fairly regularly. We appreciate your work on these threads, Kart.
I build a lot of my own equipment, from electronics to water treatment plant to tools. It's very freeing to know that if you don't have something, you may be able to make it on your own.

My flashlight in post 32 gives me a flashlight that I can pass on to my grandchildren and that never needs batteries.
For regular flashlights, I do prefer rechargeable batteries, and I have a couple of solar chargers for back packing and back up.
Some people don’t realize that they make “low self discharge” rechargeables now, that means that they can sit on the shelf for 5 years after charging, and still have life in them, in other words, they are like Alkaline batteries, except better, also they won’t leak and ruin your expensive, gear.
The ZenStove site has directions to roll your own.

Lots of good stuff on the site.
Where do you buy them and how do you store them in the Phoenix heat?
I was a couple of weeks late getting them in the ground, and that may be the problem. I may not get any seed this year, if they don't hurry.
I have seed left over from last year's crop, and I can always buy more seed, but I'm a little bummed out about that.

Wally also has some very tasty boneless chunk chicken breast .. breaks apart easily .. 10z can for ~$1.75 .. add to a bag of Knorr's Pasta Sides (many flavors) along w/ little can of vegies or 'shrooms .. makes a yummy nutritious meal for two.
I still have a couple around somewhere from when I was catering.
Storing them is no problem. In a hot SUV on a Texas summer day I never had any problem with them.

This Fenix LD12 is regulated to give the same brightness during the entire life of the battery.
Here are it's settings, notice that on low, it runs for 97 hours continuously, and it does this on a single AA battery.
You can buy the 1 pound bottles everywhere, including WalMart.
You can also buy lanterns and heaters and two burner stoves that use them, they don’t have a shelf life, and with an adapter, you can use the stoves and lanterns with the full size tanks, such as from your BBQ.
They recommend storing at 120 degrees or lower.
Well with the grid down, in the 98th hour it doesn't seem to have much value other than a door stop.
In post 71 you mention solar chargers. How are they different than what's built into the HYBRID SOLAR POWERED FLASHLIGHT WITH EMERGENCY BATTERY BACKUP or similar products such as the "d.light S10 Solar LED Lantern". Do they not work as advertised?? The "d.light" has 120 customer reviews on amazon. 90 customers give them 5 stars. Are they fake and are these products a gimmick junk as you suggested in post 32??
I guess I'm asking why not build to solar charger into the flashlight??
Cool, cheap stove made out of bricks:
