I was able to delete the old text and left a checkerboard pattern under it, I was able to cover that and make the background look blank. I will now try your suggestion.

The checkerboard pattern means 'transparent' or 'nothing is there', but only on that layer. Think hole in empty space.

Using the eyedropper(color matching) and then the bucket(area fill) will fill that empty space with the appropriate background. I assume you did that, and not a rectangular cut and paste from a clean part of the background that leaves jaggies at the interface ;).
