Open one of the OpenOrifice apps and type the text that you want, close to, or the same font, close to, or the same size. Use GIMP to determine the actual size of the jpeg (resize image will give you the info).

Save the text as an image. Yes, you can do that. Even in the word processor program.

Open another window in GIMP with the text image, make the background transparent instead of white, copy and paste into the image you want to modify.

It's so easy a cook could do it.

I left out an important step... getting rid of the original text but retaining the background, but I've given enough hints. 5 layers, to do it fast. 3 layers to do it with panache. ;)
