Hurricane Sandy will be assaulting the East Coast, morphing into a mutation of a blizzard and a hurricane, the likes of which meteorologists claim has not been seen for more than 100 years.
Government forecasters have predicted a 90 percent chance for 4 days’ worth of gale-force winds, heavy rain, flooding and maybe snow beginning on Sunday.
Traveling from the Bahamas, the storm has taken the lives of 29 people in the Caribbean at current count. The storm is traveling up the Eastern seaboard where it is predicted to collide with a seasonal nor’easter. At that point, the fury of the blizzard and the hurricane will combine before striking the highly populated areas of Washington, DC and New York City.
The storm hit Florida early Friday morning and is traveling up the coast at approximately 10 miles per hour. Forecasters say that this slow journey increases the risk of flooding, as it will strike multiple high tide cycles. Schools in the southernmost part of Florida have been closed for the remainder of the week.

1. Generators (Good ones cost dearly. Gas storage, risky. Noisy...target of thieves; maintenance etc.)

4. Seasoned Firewood. Wood takes about 6 - 12 months to become dried, for home uses.
5. Lamp Oil, Wicks, Lamps (First Choice: Buy CLEAR oil. If scarce, stockpile ANY!)
6. Coleman Fuel. Impossible to stockpile too much.
7. Hand-can openers, & hand egg beaters, whisks.
8. Water Containers (Urgent Item to obtain.) Any size. Small: HARD CLEAR PLASTIC ONLY - note - food grade if for drinking. Fill-up bath tubs or trash cans for flushing toilets
9. Mini Heater head (Propane) (Without this item, propane won’t heat a room.) or portable kerosene heater.
10. Propane Cylinders (Urgent: Definite shortages will occur.
11. Survival Guide Book.
12. Mantles: Aladdin, Coleman, etc. (Without this item, longer-term lighting is difficult.)
13. Baby Supplies: Diapers/formula. ointments/aspirin, etc.

15. Propane Cylinder Handle-Holder (Urgent: Small canister use is dangerous without this item)

If you have a extra Frig go ahead and fill the Freezer with ice.
If you have a Freezer, fill up and extra space with 2 ltrs of water or I use empty ice cream tubs so they have a chance to freeze and will help keep your freezer cold if the power goes off.
Check your meds and make sure you have enough to last you a couple weeks or better.
Don’t buy food that needs refrigeration. If you have kids buy powder milk or hot chocolate mix made milk.
If you don’t have or need a chain saw think about at least buying a axe and or a bow saw. You won’t be able to cut up downed trees, but you can clear away branches and small limbs for those who do have chain saws. and DONOT forget some good leather gloves.
Here’s another suggestion; If you don’t have any get yourself some space saver bags and vacuum seal changes of clothes, photo albums important papers and bedding. This way if you must bug out, because your house gets damaged, flooding, etc you will have dry stuff that’s protected from the weather on your move out.
Get cash!!!
Makes sure you can get to your fire wood and it is covered so it stays dry.
I will be watching with interest (and not anywhere near the path of the storm, I might add) to see if this develops into what the hype is forecasting. Taking some heat off Obama using this storm might be one crisis the media can’t afford to waste.
That said, I don’t want to minimize it either, just sayin’. I hope all potentially affected will take necessary precautions and stock up.
All this hype usually ends up being just that.
We’ll see if it ends up any worse than a catagory 2 hurricane.

They sent me 4 emails today saying how they would be monitoring Food service facilities for their refrigeration, and requiring a log book of how we monitored it.

I don’t know why, but for some reason, this storm talk is concerning me more than others. I’m hoping it’s hype or it just rolls out to sea, but I can’t quite put my finger on why it’s sort of bothering me.

I’m just a mite concerned that this storm will expose the futility of relying on computers for elections.
The only good thing is it’s a week out from the election.
Yeah, as soon as I saw the updated landfall estimate, I thought, oh whoopee — time for all our weather folk to go stark raving mad! They LIVE for this stuff.
As the now-trite saying goes: It Is What It Is.
Any Federal dollars flowing to the victims will be weeks in coming, long after the election.
Other than providing security, & search & rescue, the Feds role in recovery is minimal immediately after the storm.
And I can tell you from many experiences that storm victims are not sitting at home in the dark praising the quick reaction of ANY government - Fed, state, or local. If anything, officials are the target of bad jokes & angry frustration. Unmotivated voters will be even more unmotivated.
There is another aspect to this. Most folks lose cable tv for many days, leaving them with radio & local broadcast channels using rabbit ears. Local stations concentrate exclusively on the storm days after it passes, droning on endlessly about ice, MREs, & water. Little national & international news is available. This will hurt both candidates, but I suspect Obama will be the main loser from Sandy.
An extremely bored friend of mine from California decided that he needed to get away. He’s visiting a friend on Long Island this weekend. If anyone lives in the NYC area, please keep us posted on what’s happening? I’m not sure he’ll get my email, or bother to check on email. I agree, the hype seems really strong this time. Also have relatives in western NY - Buffalo area. So anyone from there, would also like updates on that area? Keep us posted.
Nothing like that, I think - the northern part of the storm is being sheared apart at present, and it will soon become extra-tropical. The storm will be a hefty Nor'easter, it will not be coming ashore as a hurricane.
The 1991 storm they are comparing this storm to hit my area very hard. I am more than 250 miles inland, and we had sustained winds of 60 mph or more for 12 hours. Close to 2 ft of snow as well. Most intense weather event I have been through.
The problem with Sandy is it will be slow moving, dumping huge amounts of rain, with high winds just to stir things up. Not all the trees have lost their leaves, and the ground isn’t frozen. In areas with old growth trees and above ground powerlines, the possibilities of widespread power outages and road closures are great.
The western reaches of the storm may get a large, wet snowfall, again real bad on trees and powerlines.
That part of the country gets very few tropical storms. Most folks have no idea how much flooding can occur, as they may have never seen their area flood in 40 years or so.
IMHO, the dangers from this storm aren’t the typical hurricane dangers (storm surge, brief high winds, localized flooding, etc) but more like a massive thunderstorm event lasting for nearly a day, complete with high sustained winds, widespread damage and outages covering multi-county areas somewhat inland from the coast.
Stay sane, and stay off the roads, and we will see you on the other side.
Obama is praying for a category 10 so he can declare a state of emergency and suspend elections. Could it happen? I am not sure, but I would not put it past Zero to try something like this!
