OK, here’s a football question.
You’re losing 7-6 in a high school game. There are 5 minutes left in the game. You’re punting from your own 5 yard line. You’ve already had an extra point and a field goal attempt blocked in the game.
Do you take a safety?
I’m hurt you didn’t ask me! LOL!
You know i had paid no attention to Tom Smith, but he was on Fox and friends this AM so i looked him up on line and saw he’s from Armstrong Co. grew up on a farm and worked in a mine. He is extremely impressive having the net worth he does, coming from that area. Just based on his background alone it seems he would be a great guy to have in that seat.
Crazier things have been done.
Five minutes left? That is a lifetime if you have a good offense. So it would depend on more than the info provided. The upside is kicking instead of punting and hoping for a longer field of play for your opponent. What brought up this question?
I would take the safety. Based on the fact that your placekicking game is nonexistent, you’re going to need to score a touchdown to win. If you take the safety and punt from your 20, unmolested, instead of from your 5, you should gain 15-25 yards of field position. Since you’re going to need a defensive stop and a touchdown to win, those yards, with time running out, could be crucial. Bottom line—if you have a low probability of eventually kicking a field goal, being down by 4 doesn’t hurt you any more than being down by 1, and the improved field position could help.
(Nobody else should bother answering. I am right.)
Distance fr first down? Time on clock?
