Our most excellent former pastor, Fr. John DeCelles, now at St Raymond of Penafort in Springfield, VA, gave a fantastic sermon on Sunday, the 29th Sunday of Ordinary time.

Wow. Excellent homily.

I was at a church dinner last week after mass. I spoke with our pastor and mentioned how happy I was with our new young priest, Fr. Brian. The pastor said, “oh really? I am getting mixed reviews”. He said he has had complaints and he was not there to judge for himself. I was appalled and told him so. We chatted and I mentioned a friend in DC area who sends me the homilies of a priest there. My pastor almost rolled his eyes at me.

Fr. Decelles sums up the reason I like Fr. Brian so much. Fr. Brian actually said that he will teach us what Jesus wants us to know whether we want to hear it or not.

Our pastor disagrees, it would appear. He has never spoken so frankly to us as Fr. Brian or Fr. Decelles. No surprise he wouldn’t like Fr. Brian’s homilies. I find our pastor always plays it “safe”. I don’t recall Jesus playing it safe.

Billy Graham. My SIL also reported that the sermon at her Baptist church was pretty forthright about what we are faced with on 11/6. I think that people of FAITH, regardless of denomination, know what is at stake.

that’s why i think it’s so important to give positive feedback to the priests that do go out on a limb and preach that way. you KNOW they are getting the negative comments, so it’s important that they get positive comments so they don’t get discouraged or beaten down by the libs. xshub insisted we go out by way of the front so we could shake father decelles hand and he could give him props for the sermons. father decelles is not young, but also not old. i’d say in his 40s, so he CAN take it, and he is so strong that no matter what, i’m sure he would never get beaten down. but that’s not true of all of them. so they need to hear that they are reaching and impacting people.

Thanks for the Styx-haven’t heard that song in awhile-

While Obama’s answers were yare
His handlers didn’t seem to think
That letting him play King Louis
Would make his performance stink

He was just a loose cannon rolling
Over the deck-oops, pardon-the stage
Where his sneering attitude proved
That he is far from being a sage

Remarks about bayonets and horses
His belief in his made up “results”-
Each juvenile antic has us all frantic
This “game” was designed for adults...

Well said. He didn’t point a finger AT anyone, just pointed TO God’s word.

Thank you for the link to Fr. DeCelles sermon-I wish more priests would speak out like that.

And he seems to take all comments, good or bad, to heart, and prayerfully considered his response.

It was sunny and in the mid-80’s yeaterday, cloudy and 83 now, and I’m tired of it-but Fall will be back with a cool front late Thursday.

I really like the tone of his remarks-not designed to offend, just a reminder of what God says.

One of my fav priests always starts studying the Gospel reading on Sunday night. He reads and reflects on it. He repeats this everyday until Saturday morning when what God has spoken to him in his heart crystallizes into a theme, or message, then his homily writes itself. He does not use a book during mass, he recites the reading from memory, since by then he knows it by heart. He walks out into the pews to do this and makes eye contact. The man is in his 70s. People can be heard saying that his homily was inspired. Well, duh. Too bad we don’t say that about all priests.

He moved to another parish a few years ago. I was talking to an old friend who was raving about her priest. Turned out to be the same man. I know where he is now, will probably go to one of his masses before winter.

MrT5 and I went to a church several miles out of our way for about 6 years because our former parish priest had moved there. Our church was less than 2 miles away, but we did not care for the new priest. Fortunately, the priest out here will no doubt stay forever, because we share him with another very small nearby rural church.
