The ‘enviros’ do not hate petroleum for logical, environmental reasons, they hate it because it is the greatest engine for free enterprise. Yes, I agree with you on that. I'm an environmentalist myself, but (I hope) a sensible environmentalist. I prefer not to damage the natural environment, but I also find that almost all that greenie whacko environmentalist stuff is total nonsense.
