I believe the author is correct about the timing of that declaration - it serves partially to deflect the criticism due the affair in tonight's debate. To attack 0bama over it is to attack Hillary goes this train of thought. And Hillary isn't there to defend herself, but the moderator is. Cute - Crowley defends Hillary against Romney and 0bama sails above the fray.

He is, of course, directly responsible for the outcome of the decisions of his hand-picked cabinet members including and specifically the Secretary of State. But it becomes easy to avoid the topic by saying that yes, mistakes were made and we're investigating them and now can't we just move on to Bain Capital?

And it doesn't really cost Hillary anything because no investigation will touch her and her authority figure status is validated. That's as close to a win-win situation as one might hope for from a multiple murder aided and abetted at the very least by incompetence and lack of professional diligence at the highest levels. Nor is she in any danger of falling on any metaphorical sword. Her apologia was nothing more than, "Yeah, I was in charge. What are you going to do about it?" The answer is nothing.

. . . but then there was the Beruit Marine Barracks truck bombing back during the Reagan Administration. Reagan was sake who was responsible for failing to anticipate and prevent that attack. Reagan said that he accepted that responsibility and was not going to blame the people on the ground in Lebanon for it.
Sam Donaldson then asked Reagan if he was going to resign. Of course Reagan’s meaning was that people could consider that in any decision to vote for against him. Romney could legitimately ask Obama why that same logic did not apply to Obama and Bengazi. Now that should be a no-brainer for Obama to agree to, since in reality anyone can vote for or against any candidate for any reason. But of course, when you are a messiah, that doesn’t fit your idea of the way the world is supposed to work.

And of course, there is the issue of the cock-and-bull story about the video which Obama’s administration took to the UN and to Pakistan and Egypt . . . to say nothing of the "Osama is dead and GM is alive” meme.

He is, of course, directly responsible for the outcome of the decisions of his hand-picked cabinet members including and specifically the Secretary of State. I think Mitt might be hard to budge off of that issue without leaving that challenge to Obama’s foreign policy hanging in the air.
