I believe he was referring to handloads.

I used to load my Ruger blackhawk in 45LC so hot it would partially obliterate the writing on the case heads.

Sure, and you can do that. So can you with the .44. I have no problem with .45 Colt +P loads either. But if you want a .44 magnum, get a .44 magnum.
