No, it didn't end. The only question is whether it should be available to all, or only to those who can afford it (e.g. private gated communities, etc).
Quaint ideas such as yours will never be allowed to stop progress or making money.
Those "quaint ideas" of mine - small government, subsidiarity, etc. - aren't really mine. I stole them from the Founders. If they stand in the way of your "progress", then perhaps progressivism is your problem.
