In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
strepitous \STREP-i-tuhs\, adjective
boisterous; noisy.
Example sentences:
But what strepitous sounds, what harmonious tumult diverts my attention to another part ?
-- José Francisco de Isla, The History of the Famous Preacher, Friar Gerund de Campazas
Here is no idyllic meditative retreat from the strepitous city but a scene of virile actionfields sounding with human labor, vibrating with human energy.
-- Beulah B. Amram, "Swinburne and Carducci," The Yale Review
Etymology:
Strepitous stems from the Latin word strepit which meant "noise."
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....
Review Thread One: Word For The Day, Thursday 11/14/02: Raffish (Be SURE to check out posts #92 and #111 on this thread!)
Review Thread Two: Word For The Day, Tuesday 1/14/03: Roister
Review Thread Three: Word For The Day, Tuesday 1/28/03: Obdurate
WFB's attempt to emulate us ; ) No pushing at the door please!
spitting image!
Are you mis-spelling Romney's name on purpose? The reason I ask is that I wonder about its derivition. Just as every Miller had a miller in his ancestry, and every Silverstein probably had a money lender , or a silversmith, in his ancestry, does Romney come from Romeny? IOW, were the Romney ancestors gypsies at some point in their evolution? (Earlier than their treks to Utah, Mexico, and back again.)

Strepitous
This one is easy since our local medicine man started reading books. He said a patient had a infection called a strepitous troat (I think he meant throat but he’s foreign, N.Y., or some other place).
I guess strepitous does mean noisey cause that infected throat produced more useless noise than the t.v. news.
wish i could get you the ones i have in my family room!
A for you! What a night!
I saw that. Very funny stuff. Then I spotted that pic on Twitter. Too funny.
what happened to that thread?? I copied that pic to send to my friends and family and when i got back to FR the thread was pulled. that pic speaks a thousand words [all profane] LMAO!
Nope. Sometimes my fingers get out of order.
Priceless!
I also loved the line from R directed at O, “I’ve been in business 25 years, and I have no idea what you are talking about!”
what was it? a caption this photo thread? LOL I found that on FoxNation from my twitter feed.
don’t recall exactly what the thread was titled, but that was where i saw the pic.
Romney: “you spent two years fighting for Obamacare not fighting for jobs”.
Oh, yeah.......that one resonates.
Meanwhile algore blamed the thin air. A+ for you!
They said David Plouffe, his fluffer, was crying. A for you!
One of the funnier Tweets this morning:
That wasn’t a debate so much as Mitt Romney just took Obama for a cross country drive strapped to the roof of his car.
