Rush, Public Enemy among Rock Hall of Fame noms
By CHRIS TALBOTT, AP Music Writer 6 minutes ago
Rush, Deep Purple, Public Enemy and N.W.A. are among the group of first-time nominees for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
They join returnees Heart, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, Randy Newman, Donna Summer and Kraftwerk among the 15 artists vying for entry.
Even in the iPod age, the list of nominees up for induction in 2013 is as eclectic as they come. Nominees differ wildly in sound, origin and influence, ranging from the enduring prog rock of Canadian trio Rush and Procul Harum to German proto-electronica act Kraftwerk, the disco of Chic and Summer to the New Orleans funk of The Meters and the blues of Albert King and the Paul Butterfield Blues Band.
Motown also is represented by first-ballot entries The Mavelettes.
Joel Peresman, President and CEO of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation, acknowledged the extreme variety of this year's nominee class in a Thursday news release.

No room. Need more ‘rap’ in the ‘Rock&Roll’ HF don’t ya know....
It’s only fair.
Will be seeing them in another month. There is no Plan B.
I don’t know - I’ve gotten kind of used to the idea of Rush not being in the HOF. Sort of beneath them somehow!
As one letter-to-the editor to Rolling Stones wrote regarding the magazine finally writing an article on Rush said:
“Thank you for the article on Rush. F*&^ You.”
Mixed feelings for Rush. On one hand, it is far, far overdue for them to get this recognition. On the other hand, I’ve come to realize the R&R Hall of Fame basically ought to be called “The Hall of Bands Jann Wiener -er, “Wenner” personally likes.”
Of the rest listed:
Deep Purple - Heck yeah! The best concert I’ve ever seen was DP in 1986 on the Perfect Strangers tour. Great band.
Public Enemy and N.W.A. - More examples of Wenner-ism. I get that these two acts were rap pioneers. But, just like Eric B. and Rakim (who made it in a year or two ago), they’ve got absolutely no link to rock music. Start a rap and hip-hop hall of fame if you’re so hot for them, Wenner!
Heart - I was never a big fan of Ann and Nancy, but I give them credit for being ground breakers. There weren’t that many women in the harder end of rock music when they came along. Lots of pop/dance types, and quite a few soul and blues singers, but hard rock, not so much. I’d vote for them on that basis.
Joan Jett and the Blackhearts - eh.
Randy Newman - meh. He’s okay. I put a lot of other acts ahead of him. (is Warren Zevon in yet?)
Donna Summer - not sure about this one. She’s done a lot of different genres, but I really don’t know if she’d done much that would be considered rock.
Kraftwerk - Absolutely agree with this one. The influence Ralf and Florian have had on rock music, and nearly every other modern genre, is huge. Pretty much any band that’s ever used a synthesizer or a drum machine has taken a cue from their pioneering work with electronic instruments and song structures using them. They kinda wrote the book, so to speak.
Speaking of Maiden and deserving of induction...
Pretty much any album up till Blaze Baily should qualify them on it’s own. Together as a body of work, who can top it? Floyd, Zep or the Beatles perhaps. But that’s all. And debatable.
As for Rush, 2112 and Moving Pictures (Red Barchetta is forever in my top 10) should have earned them the nod. A long time ago.
All that talent going to waste.
They're like the smoking hot chick that doesn't put out.
Yeah! Oooooh... yeah!
Will Reagan also be inducted for inspiring hardcore punk 45 and album art?
Disco Disco Blues Blues Rap Rap Crap Crap.
PUT LINK WRAY IN THE DAMN HALL ALREADY.
“He is the king; if it hadn’t been for Link Wray and ‘Rumble,’ I would have never picked up a guitar’,” - Pete Townsend
‘David Bowie, Bob Dylan, Steve Van Zandt and Bruce Springsteen have also been quoted as saying that Wray and “Rumble” inspired them to become musicians.’
Also idolized by John Lennon and the Cramps and and and...
“The definition of ‘rock and roll’ means different things to different people, but as broad as the classifications may be, they all share a common love of the music,” Peresman said.
Apparently Peresman is a poofter and a paid stooge who doesn’t understand ROCK & ROLL.
When is Andy Williams getting in as an innovator/motivator? After all, yutes had to have something to rebel AGAINST.
Notice that the same Iron Maiden that was ignored by radio despite decades of successful stadium touring, will also be ignored by the RnR HOF.
It’s a joke. IM is far older than the rap bands they will put in this year.
If selected, Rush should turn them down. They are far above such banal judgments. :)
And Maiden has inspired probably millions of musicians to pick up guitar, bass, drums, or start singing.
Even I try to emulate Dave Murray as much as I can.
The Final Frontier charted at number 4 on the US Billboard charts. That’s amazing for a metal band.
It would have been nice if Rush was able to be nominated for being able to acheive success on their own terms. However, they knew they wouldn’t get it that way and spent the last year selling out. The attack on Rush Limbaugh, Neil Peart telling Rolling Stoned that his Ayn Rand influence was just something 40 years ago and his attack on Christianity, Geddy saying great things about Michael Moore and meeting him.
On top of that, I wasn’t impressed with the new record, so it was a good reason not to buy it and go to their overpriced concert.
So they got their reward for selling out to the leftist music intelligencia. Enjoy it guys, because you lost my support after 28 years earlier this year.
I will say, Albert King deserves the nomination as well as Paul Butterfield Blues Band, which had the first American guitar hero, Michael Bloomfield, as a member.
Stevie Ray Vaughan needs to be nominated. He deserved it more than Rush does.
