There was another story written in 1912 called “The Scarlett Plague” by Jack London where the collapse started in 2013. It was about a grandfather telling his grandkids of how life was before the collapse and what happened. It took place around the same time as “The Collapse.”

This quite possibly was the inspiration or model for the book "Earth Abides" by George R. Stewart and published in 1949. The final theme in "Earth Abides" is much the same as the theme of "The Scarlett Plague" - to pass knowledge down to the next generations.

"Earth Abides" is still a pretty good read even though it was published well over 60 years ago. The core challenges faced by survivors are universal and timeless.

I’ve read that story! We have it in an old book fronm the 1930’s and it is an awesome story! The part about eating crab on the beach by the Cliff House is really memorable!
