It spawned an internal review, which Mr. Freeh said Mr. Paterno followed closely. It was an investigation that Mr. Paterno, through his family after Mr. Sandusky’s arrest, previously maintained he knew nothing about.
I also remember an interview with a hairdresser in State College who said that Sandusky's proclivities were well known in town.

You’re quoting freeh’s “summary”, which is (by his admission) based on “reasonable conclusions”.
The facts are that the “summary” is in no way backed up by the evidence in the report. This is really undeniable, once you read the actual report.
You believe the NYTimes and louis freeh all you want. They both are proven liars. Joe Paterno is not.
