After all the hoopla, the Apples iPhone debut on Friday more than lived up to expectations, with analysts estimating as many as 10 million sales by tomorrow and more than 130 million by the end of the year.. But there is a surprising quirk in the numbers. More than half of American mobile subscribers 55.5 percent are now owners of smartphones of all types, but for white people, the numbers make up just 45 percent, the lowest of any ethnic group, new findings from Nielsen show. Sixty-six percent of Asians, 56 percent of Hispanics and 55 percent of African-Americans use smartphones to check e-mail, play games and surf the Web.

Lol, and you care so little, you haven't even noticed that it's spelled "Tracfone". I have one, too, for emergencies and travel. But I do use it some and just upgraded to what I'd term a semi-smart phone mostly so I'd have another source of weather reports with radar if my power goes off.
I don’t get email on my phone because guess what I actually have a computer.
If someone of the superior intellectual capacity of our pResident cannot fathom the iPhone, how could *I* hope to be able to use one.....
The PPC-6700 was the first Windows Mobile 5 phone to hit the US market. I consider more recent iPhone series, android and Microsoft phones to have made evolutionary improvements over the PPC-6700. Obviously, there have been improvements in size, performance, Operating Systems and applications but the basic functionality and uses are similar.
We have upgraded from the PPC-6700 but have a grandfathered Sprint plan with free unlimited data. Sprint won't let us upgrade from our current HTC Touch Pro 2s without going to a plan that will cost approximately twice as much. I should probably thank Sprint for keeping me from wasting more money on trinkets that I don't really need.
By disadvantaged whites you mean ones who work for a living and don’t have spare money nor time to have a super-phone?
Nope... Jimmy Buffet is rich
I’m just a bum with a mancave that sails

Tracphone here too. I take it with me when I leave the house but its off most of the time.
Metro PCS gave me a special deal on this Android I got it for 40 bucks
Now they’re having a sale on the next faster Android for 110 bucks, but I’m too cheap... going to drive this one into the ground
Mrs. jimfree is one of those white people resisting the new technology and selecting the older mobile phone styles. She had an epiphany this week attending a conference. Doubting the scholarship of some of the presenters she would like to have had the web at her fingertips. Won’t be very long now.
I don’t drive a Catty, or very expensive Japanese or German car. I don’t feel the need for phony status.
Maybe these whites are smarter than their smartphones, ya think?
They refer to ‘us’ as white people.
Shouldn’t we DEMAND to be called Non AA, Non Asian, Non Hispanic etc or EuroAmericans?
My first ‘cell’ phone cost 3 grand, was hardwired in my vehicle and the ‘catch phrase’ of the day was “You won’t believe where I am calling you from” at the rate of .50 or so per minute CHARGED when phone was out of cradle.
Use it like crazy to 1st bill then start to ‘wise up’.
Whites receive disproportionately less in subsidized income than those other groups with the exception of Asians. I, for one, see no reason for a smartphone. I’m surrounded by computers throughout the day. Sure, it would be convenient at times or kind of fun. But so would a lot of things I don’t buy.
That $30 per month per person could be going into an emergency fund or funding a Roth IRA.
Me? I bought a flipphone that was waterproof so that I know the thing is getting through a 2-year contract.
All these little excess gadgets are happily collecting information on the users.
BTW did anyone see Dr Who last night? Think about it.
Was sarcasm. ;) We also are sailors. Don’t live on it but have a 40 ft Yorktown. I am actually trying to talk hubby into buying a motoryacht and moving on to it.
I file this one under “inequalities that do not bother me”.
Also, think about this:
What % of the Amish are white?
What % of the Amish use smart phones?
Of those Amish who do not use smart phones, how many of them feel it is a major source of unhappiness in their lives?
Live and let live.
This white guy is doing everything he can to manage his monthly nut. I have cut the cable (http://thebeersoncomcast.wordpress.com/) and the cell phone bill is in my sights. Of course, if someone else were paying my cable and phone bills, I’d go full boat on both.
The smarter the phones get and the more popular they become, more and more of my friends seem unable to communicate with me in person.
Instead, even during a visit, their heads are down and their eyes are focused on that tiny screen of their new toy. Occasionally they come up for air and say something meaningless, impersonal or off the subject I thought we were having.
The next time that happens I’m going to text them during the visit and see if they respond by text even though I’m in the same room.
